چکیده

It is shown in this paper that all internal nodes with the same subtree can be treated as a single state in a code tree of a fixed-to-variable length code (FV code) when we use CapocelliGrango-Vaccaro algorithm and Even algorithm to check whether the FV code has a self-synchronizing string. Based on this reduced state representation, we characterize three types of code trees with no self-synchronizing string and evaluate the number of code trees included in each type. The results of exhaustive search is also given for all code trees with 21 or less leaves.

In compressed data a single bit error propagates because of the corruption of the decoder’s state. This work is a study of error resilience in compressed data and, in particular, of the recovery of as much data as possible after a bit error. It is focused on Huffman codes. In a message encoded with a Huffman code a bit error causes the decoder to lose synchronization with the coder. The error p...

Almost all complete binary prefix codes have a self-synchronizing string

The probability that a complete binary prefix code has a selfsynchronizing string approaches one, as the number of codewords tends to infinity.

Self-Synchronizing Reversible Variable Length Codes

A reversible variable-length code (RVLC) is a code in which the bit stream formed by a portion of a codeword, or by the overlapped portion of two or more adjacent codewords, is not a valid codeword. A self-synchronizing RVLC allows for a sequence of codewords to be decoded either backwards or forwards without any external synchronization. In this article, we present an algorithm for constructin...

Dynamic Huffman Coding

Given nonnegative weights (wr, . . . , w,,), the well-known algorithm of Huffman [2] can be used to construct a binary tree with n external nodes and n 1 internal nodes, where the external nodes are labeled with the weights (wr, . . . , w,) in some order. Huffman’s tree has the minimum value of WJ, + * * . + w,,l, over all such binary trees, where lj is the level at which wj occurs in the tree....

Self Synchronising T-codes to Replace Huffman Codes

This paper describes recent work on the T-Codes, which are a new class of variable length codes with superlative selfsynchronizing properties. The T-Code construction algorithm i s outlined, and it is shown that in situations where codeword synchronization is important the T-Codes can be used instead of Huffman codes, giving excellent self-synchronizing properties without sacrificing coding eff...
